ESP - Maljkovic hoping for real good season
MADRID (Liga ACB) - Real Madrid coach Bodizar Maljkovic believes that the time has finally come for his club to rediscover the successful form that has been missing in recent seasons.
Maljkovic replaced Julio Lamas as Madrid coach this summer as the club strive to end a period in the wilderness that has seen them fail to win anything for the past three campaigns.
Two years ago under Javier Imbroda, the club failed to reach the end of season play-offs for the first time in their history and although last season saw an improvement, they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage by local rivals Estudiantes.
However with players of the calibre of Louis Bullock and Estudiantes' Felipe Reyes switching to Madrid during the close season, Maljkovic is hoping for a huge improvement.
"I am very optimistic, I am not going to say we will win the league, because they are not saying anything like that in Barcelona, in Tau, Pamesa, Estudiantes or Unicaja," Maljkovic told Diario AS.
"We are a team with five new players, a new coach and different ideas. We will have to adapt to each other, while other teams who have won titles in recent seasons have hardly made changes."
Those five new players could soon become six as the Madrid coach revealed there is one more player he would like to see in his squad - French small forward Laurent Foirest.
"In the EuroLeague we are going to be up against players who have tall small forwards: players similar to Carlos Jimenez or Andres Nocioni (now at the Chicago Bulls)," he added.
"We are after Foirest, but if we can't get him, then we will carry on with the squad that we have."
Maljkovic is relishing the creative possibilities that new signing Bullock will offer, alongside veteran Elmer Bennett, who was Madrid's best player last season.
"Maybe they are not a typical pairing, but I know the quality they have and what they are able to do," he said.
"They will be very important to our game in terms of counter-attacking, penetration, shooting and one-against-ones.
"Great players never have problems understanding each other."

Spain / Maljkovic asks for Foirest
By Robert Rodriguez
Laurent Foirest (F, 31, 1.97) may be the wanted forward for new Boza's Real Madrid. Team tried to sign french forward at the beginning of summer when Pau Orthez financial problems forced team
to sell some of its players. After this selling, Pau financial problem reduced and wanted more money for Laurent.
Real Madrid decided to negociate but french club didn't want to and decided not to reduce a cent of Foirest clause.
Now that seasons beginning seems near, Boza wants to complete the squad with a forward, but Pau Orthez won't put things easy for 'white' team, that is also thinking in Milan Gurovic if Laurent is not the man.
